MEET TEAM ELGO We constantly ask ourselves, and you our guests, how can we improve things here at the Elgin and how can we ensure ‘Better never stops’. Last winter we replaced half the beds in the hotel putting in place new Hypnos Balmoral mattresses for your comfort. The year before, during lockdown we re-slated the upper roof and at the same time fitted 72 solar panels. This winter amongst other things our main project is refurbishing the restaurant. This is all very necessary to keep us up-to-date withmodern living and guest expectations, but this would be futile without the right personnel – ‘Team Elgo’.These are the people here to deliver the food, the drinks, the entertainment and the hospitality that you all enjoy. We are extremely fortunate to have such a long standing wonderful group of people who commit such a large part of their lives to the hotel. WE REALLY ARE INCREDIBLY PROUD OF OUR TEAM AND WE KNOW IT IS THEM THAT MAKE THE ELGIN THRIVE. IIP GOLD STATUS We are proud to say that we have been award a Gold Investors in People Status; showing our commitment to going above and beyond to provide our staff with the necessary support and training they require to enjoy fulfilment in their careers. Not only that, but this training allows our staff to provide you with the best service possible. Gary,Head Chef, joined us in 1987 as Commis Chef and has been head chef for the past 34 years. His Number 2 Gary has nowbeen with us 20 years. Gary & Gary are very well supported by 3rd chef Karen who joined us this year, and a real ‘unsung hero’ in Michael who not only keeps the kitchen clean, does a lot of veg preparation and is also involved at service times. Headwaiter Tom joined us in 1998 as No2 to Robert, who himself joined us in 1996.Tom has been in charge for the past 15 years.Robert still works here in the kitchen 2 days a week and does an amazing job keeping it clean – not bad for an‘ageing teenager’! Arek is Tom’s No2 and has been with the team for 11 years. They are very ably supported by stalwarts Iain who had been working at the Bollingbroke for 5 years when we took it over in 2001.Nok and Ieva have been here 12 years and together with several other newer recruits make up the restaurant team. Ieva’s husband Alvis is in charge of maintenance andwith the support of Ivars and a whole host of qualified electricians and plumbers keeps the property in good shape. Not only that but he also keeps us on our toes with a fewpractical jokes and a wicked sense of humour. In the bar we are very fortunate to have the‘Adams Family’, leading from the front. Head BarmanMark and his sister Maria were brought up in a hotel and together with their family ran the very popularMaximeHotel situated on the Gynn roundabout, hospitality is very much in the blood! They are supported by their No 2, the ever energetic Leeanne, as well as Carl, George on the Bar and Gary on the bingo and quiz. One or two new recruits complete the team. Susan joined us in lockdown and leads a small but very efficient ReceptionTeamof Jozef, Debbie and Zoe.TheTours office is led by Beth who joined us as a 16 year old 22 years ago, she is supported by Jo who was previously Head Receptionist and looks after the groups, youngmumOlivia, new recruit Olga fromUkraine, and our senior professional in the formof Patricia Barnett who had forced retirement fromBlackpool Council at the age of 65 – that was 22 years ago.We will let you do themaths! Talking of people joining us at a young age,we are extremely fortunate in 1996 at the time of theYTS Scheme, when a young lady aged 16 years graced our doorstep. She had very good O level results I did ask her mother at the time did she not want to take A levels and go on to university. The answer was a 100%NO and their loss was our gain.Amy is still with us today and takes care of all the accounts, wages, licenses and legal requirements. Front of Housemanager Garry has nowbeen with us some 20 years and as well as a lot of Meeting and Greeting, is in the kitchen at service times. He has always been one to go that Extra Mile whether it’s been staying in the hotel overnight to relieve a night watchman or appearing on the television for us in‘Four in a bed’or ‘Bargain Hunting Brits’, Garry’s theman. Last but nomeans least Amanda, our Operations Manager is verymuch the glue that’s bonds us all together.Amanda joined us in 2006 and is never one to duck a challenge, carries a huge share of thework load and can always be relied upon to see a job completed even if it means stepping in andmaking beds, serving drinks in the bar or sorting out technical issues with computers and banking.‘Dependable’ is her middle name. Our longest standingmember of staff is Joy our Evening Supper Lady. Joy joined us is 1983 and amongst many other traits is an avid Elvis fan. She said at the time she came that it was to‘get out of the house for a few hours’. This we found hard to comprehend until we discovered that she was a foster Mum.Over many years Joy and her late husband Ron, cared for over 300 children. Our newest head of department is Sharon in Housekeeping, Sharon joined us after lockdown, and given she had no previous experience in this department, has done the hotel a huge service particularly in times of general staff shortages in 2021 and early 2022. She is well supported at No2 by Jen who previously worked at our sister hotel The Sheraton. ELGIN LEISURE BREAKS • 2023 13
